GoGlobal: Finland

BioSA has recently hosted a series of workshops on cooperation between the South African and Finnish biotech sectors, sponsored by COFISA (Cooperation Framework in Innovation Systems between Finland and South Africa). These workshops, held in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, were all very well attended and provided an excellent platform for collaborative ventures. As a direct result, several South African biotech companies have found complementary partners in Finland, and will soon be visiting Finland to take their discussions to the next level.

In addition, the workshop-discussions have also yielded valuable strategic insight into the South African biotech sector’s strengths and weaknesses. It is clear that South Africa needs a more coordinated, coherent vision and strategy to optimise the value from its potential strategic advantages. One of the most prominent potential strategic advantages, our country’s biodiversity, will soon be the subject of a follow-up workshop.
